Spirit is as his name denotes - a lively, oftentimes troublesome young stallion with a clever mind and a heart of gold. As young as he is, Spirit often finds himself too curious for his own good, but it's because of the mishaps he's got himself into that he's developed a sharp mind that easily finds his way out again. As he matures the adult inside of him will only continue to grow and flourish, revealing his strong leadership and a fierce loyalty to his herd.

As seen in the movie, Spirit is the leader of the herd of horses he grew up with in the terra Homeland Valley. However, when he returns to Homeland, he'll make a startling discovery that another stallion has taken over his herd! Spirit will have to work to get back the members of his herd, including his mother Esperanza and friends Little Shoulders, Sierra, and Fuego, among others. Rain will have to help him of course, as she is his lead mare. Spirit will also have his friend Little Creek to fall back on if he needs it; his continued friendship with the native may help him in such dire situations as this.

Spirit is a brave and noble young Kiger mustang born free on the open plains of the American West in the late 1800s. As leader of the Cimarron herd, Spirit is a proud, strong stallion who is determined to maintain the freedom of his herd at any cost. As a colt he was born in the spring, in a field of lush grass and wild flowers, on the open plains of the American West. Filled with wonder at the world around him, the curious young foal amuses his mother, Esperanza, with his playful antics and sense of adventure, as he grows from a restless, carefree colt into a proud and strong stallion. As leader of the Cimarron herd, the brave and noble mustang is determined to maintain his freedom at any cost. In the course of his many adventures, he is confronted by men who try to break him, forms a special friendship with the young American Indian Little Creek, and falls in love with the beautiful paint mare Rain. Through it all, Spirit discovers the true hero inside himself.

Although she can seem reserved, the mare is simply modest in her affections, saving them for those she knows she can trust. She is not one to make compulsive or spontaneous decisions, trusting instead in her ability to make thoroughly rational decisions and the safety that the familiar provides. With Spirit, however, she can allow herself to move more freely and at the very least tag along on his less sagacious antics.

Although she is tempted to run away with Spirit, Rain's intstincts bring her back to Little Creek's side when he needs her most.

Yes - he is as prone to compulsiveness and reckless behavior as Spirit is, this being the reason perhaps that they became friends.

The current plot of Cimarron will see difficulty come Little Creek's way, delivered by the hands of the cavalry of the U.S. Army. Although his time will be spent primarily at home with the rest of his tribe, trying to ward off the attacks and nightly raids the soldiers will wage against the natives from time to time, he will occasionally have Spirit and Rain come visit, as they were both under his hand at one time in the past. Rain will always hold his heart, as they rode together happily for years back before Spirit came along; but he is happy that she found freedom and happiness with her new mate. Little Creek will also be able to achieve many great things within his tribe because of his steadfast determination and good will towards others, and will prove to be a strong leader as time goes on.

She was and is a great leader, and Spirit still looks to her for guidance at times. Either way, he was never present in his son's life.
